Kingdom of Night

Kingdom of Night

Kingdom of Night arrives as a wonderfully dark, neon-drenched love letter to 80s supernatural horror, brilliantly fusing the coming-of-age drama of classic suburbia with deep isometric action-RPG mechanics. Developed by Friends of Safety and published by DANGEN Entertainment, the game drops players into the small town of Miami, Arizona during a fateful night in 1987. When a local satanic cult accidentally summons an ancient demon lord, a regular teenager named John must pick up weapons to save his kidnapped neighbors before the sun rises.

The gameplay structure is organized into an hour-by-hour race against time, allowing you to freely explore an interconnected, demon-infested neighborhood map to complete open-ended quests. Players choose from five distinct playable classes—including Barbarian, Knight, Rogue, Necromancer, and Sorcerer—each featuring three massive skill tree branches that allow for deep tactical customization. Combat is fast, snappy, and intensely satisfying, requiring you to actively hack, slash, and dodge through nightmare hordes while hoarding loot from a robust, multi-tiered gear system.

Visually, the game is a glorious pixel-art spectacle, perfectly capturing the aesthetic of late-80s suburbia with its arcade parlors, back alleys, and demonically corrupted high schools. The atmosphere is heavily bolstered by a phenomenal, pulsing synthwave soundtrack that shifts effortlessly from moody suspense to high-energy combat anthems. The inclusion of full local cooperative multiplayer adds an extra layer of fun, letting you and a friend combine different character classes to tear through massive boss dungeons together.

While the game beautifully nails its aesthetic and nostalgic references, the narrative can occasionally rely a bit too heavily on well-worn horror tropes, and managing the expansive skill trees can feel slightly overwhelming during the early hours. Nevertheless, the open-ended exploration, deep character customization, and addictive loot loops keep the momentum incredibly strong throughout John’s long night. Kingdom of Night is a highly polished, wonderfully atmospheric action-RPG that serves up a perfect slice of retro horror goodness.
