Jusant

Jusant is an absolutely breathtaking, meditative climbing action game that trades traditional video game violence for a peaceful, poetic journey up a colossal stone tower. Developed by Don’t Nod, the game takes place in a beautifully desolate world where the oceans have long since evaporated, leaving a nomadic young boy and his water-elemental companion, Ballast, to ascend an impossibly tall cliffside. It makes an immediate impression with its quiet, minimalist storytelling and deep reverence for environmental scale.

The game’s standout achievement is its tactile climbing mechanics, which require players to use the controller’s left and right triggers to independently operate the protagonist’s hands:

[Left Trigger] ---> Grip Left Hand
[Right Trigger] ---> Grip Right Hand

You must manually manage your stamina, place safety pitons, swing across massive chasms, and read the rock face to find stable handholds. The addition of your companion’s magical echo ability allows you to awaken ancient flora, turning dormant vines into sudden, vertical pathways to aid your ascent.

Visually, the game is a masterclass in stylized minimalism, utilizing sweeping camera angles, sharp natural lighting, and a gorgeous, sun-bleached color palette to emphasize the sheer vertigo of your journey. As you climb higher, you explore the hollowed-out remains of past civilizations, piecing together a silent narrative through abandoned homes and forgotten letters. The audio design matches this peaceful grandeur flawlessly, relying on wind patterns, creaking ropes, and a delicate, soaring orchestral score.

If there is a critique to be made, it is that the experience is relatively short, and seasoned platforming fans might find the lack of a true failure state or lethal fall damage a bit too forgiving. However, to treat Jusant as a challenging skill test is to miss its true artistic intent. It is a deeply comforting, mechanical poem about perseverance, environmental rebirth, and the beautiful quiet of the clouds, standing out as an unforgettable masterpiece of interactive relaxation.
