PlayStation’s September State of Play Double-Header: Wolverine, FFVII Revelation, and the Road to 2027

By trading its usual afternoon timeslot for an early-morning, dual-broadcast spectacle, Sony’s September 3 State of Play made a clear statement: the PlayStation 5’s next eighteen months are packed to the brim. Splitting the event into a global blockbuster showcase and a dedicated State of Play Japan hosted by Yuki Kaji, PlayStation laid out a staggering roadmap of long-awaited sequels, hefty expansions, and a few left-field hardware drops.

The Main Event: Insomniac, Square Enix, and Rockstar

The global broadcast wasted no time getting to the heavy hitters. With its launch just days away on September 15, 2026, Marvel’s Wolverine received a blistering final trailer. Insomniac Games showcased a bloody, mutant-heavy narrative, confirming appearances from Jean Grey, Sabertooth, Mystique, and Omega Red as Logan carves his way through Bolivar Trask’s forces.

Closing out the primary showcase was a massive 10-minute deep dive into Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Square Enix finally pulled the curtain back on the vast, seamless open-world exploration that will cap off the remake trilogy, cementing an April 8, 2027 release date.

Rockstar Games also made a brief, highly anticipated appearance—not with a new trailer, but with hardware. To coincide with the generation-defining launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, Sony revealed a limited edition black-and-white GTA VI DualSense controller, dropping alongside the game on November 19, 2026.

For shooter and horror fans, Metro 2039 provided the first look at PlayStation 5 Pro gameplay, locking in a February 4, 2027 launch. Meanwhile, Until Dawn 2 surprised viewers by securing a much closer release date of January 28, 2027, introducing a new cast of ghost hunters exploring an abandoned island sanatorium.

Breathing New Life into Current Hits

Rather than relying entirely on unreleased titles, Sony dedicated significant time to its post-launch roadmaps. Ghost of Yōtei is getting a Complete Edition on October 1, 2026, headlined by the “Echoes of Sekigahara” DLC and a grueling “Most Wanted” survival mode that marks the playable return of Jin Sakai.

Capcom announced the massive Ascendance expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, coming in 2027, which teased a disturbing new ecological threat in the Forbidden Lands. Additionally, Crimson Desert will receive its underwater and naval combat expansion, Charting the Unknown, next month on October 15, and Gran Turismo 7 players can look forward to the two-part Spec IV update bringing new circuits, cars, and a casual Family Mode before the year ends.

Cult Classics and Hardware Nostalgia

The showcase maintained a steady rhythm of oddities and indie darlings. Maneater 2 was officially announced for 2027, promising more “ShaRkPG” chaos in an ultra-luxury resort setting dubbed Neptune’s Kingdom. Puzzle fans got a look at Uncanyon from the creators of Maquette, and Double Fine confirmed its PC/Xbox hit Keeper is finally making the jump to PS5.

On the physical front, Sony unveiled a functional LEGO PlayStation 1 console arriving October 1, 2026. The broadcast even briefly pivoted to cinema, debuting an exclusive, zombie-infested clip from Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil film ahead of its September 18 theatrical debut.

State of Play Japan: JRPGs and High-Octane Action

Immediately following the global stream, State of Play Japan took over, delivering a rapid-fire succession of Asian-developed titles.

Square Enix kept the momentum rolling with Final Fantasy Resonance, a stunning HD-2D quasi-remake that revealed Sephiroth as a major boss fight. To top it off, a playable demo went live on the PlayStation Store during the broadcast.

The China Hero Project highlighted Daba: Land of Water Scar, a striking action-RPG slated for Spring 2027, while Konami shocked viewers with Rhapsody in Scarlet, a fast-paced 1920s New York fantasy action game.

Bandai Namco had a heavy presence, officially revealing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 for a 2027 release with deeper hero customization, alongside a March 5, 2027 date for Gundam Rogue Orbit. The studio also outlined major DLC plans, including the Hero’s Eternal Legacy expansion for Digimon Story Time Stranger, which adds 50 new monsters in 2027.

Rounding out the broadcast were deep cuts for dedicated fans, including the long-delayed Fate/Extra Record (finally arriving January 2027) and a fresh look at CONQ: Crown of No Quarter, which promises a wild blend of large-scale naval battles and necromancy.

PlayStation’s dual-format presentation successfully mapped out a relentless schedule for PS5 owners, proving that the console’s momentum is only accelerating as it heads toward 2027.
