Retrace The Light

Retrace The Light

Retrace The Light enters the action-RPG arena with a high-concept sci-fi premise that feels ripped straight from modern tech headlines, even though it takes place a millennium into the future. Developed by Xiaming Game, this 2.5D adventure places you in the digital chassis of Decem, an “Enforcer” program serving a supreme, omnipresent AI named Primus. Primus keeps the global peace by digitizing and forcibly cleansing the minds of citizens deemed psychologically unstable, making you the cold hand of a utopian panopticon.

The gameplay loop stands out primarily due to its titular Spatial Retracing mechanic. As you venture into “Mirrormazes”—the shattered, abstract manifestations of human consciousness—you wield the ability to drop anchors and instantly teleport back to previously visited positions. This time-and-space-bending gimmick elevates both the combat and puzzle-solving, allowing you to seamlessly blink out of danger, flank towering bosses, or solve intricate environmental riddles. Accompanied by modular upgrades, it allows for a highly tailorable playstyle.

Visually, the game opts for a deceptively soft and vibrant aesthetic that beautifully contrasts the dark, Orwellian subtext of its plot. Traveling from ancient, surreal ruins to hyper-futuristic digital motherboard hubs provides excellent environmental variety. The narrative, enriched by multiple endings, attempts a deeply philosophical dive into machine learning, governmental overreach, and the erasure of human trauma. It handles these themes with a surprisingly modern relevance, heavily mirroring the sci-fi DNA of classics like Tron.

While the concept is undeniably brilliant, Retrace The Light sometimes struggles to step out of the shadow of its isometric peers, occasionally relying on predictable narrative beats and familiar action-adventure layouts. The pacing can feel a bit preordained, and the mechanical execution outside of the spatial teleportation is relatively traditional. Nevertheless, it remains a highly polished, intellectually engaging experience that rewards players looking for a smart sci-fi story wrapped in sharp tactical combat.
